What is Sexting?
|
Textual harassment is unwanted and unsolicited text messages. We will be focusing on sexting, a form of textual harassment that have been conventionally defined as “the exchange of sexual messages or images and the creating, sharing and forwarding of sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images through mobile devices and the Internet. (Ringrose,Gili, Livingstone & Harvey, 2012). There has been rising interest in this topic because of the legal implications with the majority of our students that are minor, which is under the age of 18.
Quantitative research on sexting has found rates as wide as 15% to 40% among young people, depending on age and the way what is understood as sexting is measured. However, quantitative research alone cannot offer in-depth understandings about the nature or complexity of technologically mediated sexual expression or activity via mobile or online media. Many teenagers do not even use the term ‘sexting’ indicating a gap between adult discourse and young people’s experiences (Ringrose, et al., 2012) Reference: Ringrose, J., Gili, R., Livingstone, S., & Harvey, L.
